Portfolio 1992-1995       | SLIDE SHOW |

These years are dominated by change: the canvas and silks are traded for handmade paper, a material that permits the use of other processes in addition to silkscreen printing. Pure cotton paper can hold the fabric printing inks, picture transfer, colour wash and even graphite lead drawing. The modeling qualities of moist paper help to emboss and produce relief. Fabric paper can also be cut, folded, sewed. I collect sheets of many formats, I meet artists and craftsman who use paper in their works, as a material, a medium and a surface. I have adopted the hanging format while others like Jocelyne Gaudreau prefer sculpting and modeling paper.

Embossed Papers

«À la plage»
«Vertèbre de loup marin»

Embossed papers are made in my studio. I enjoy modeling sheets made with moist cotton paste sieved and dried. I insert some materials drifted to the shore by the sea and offered to the vacationer on some summer afternoons. When taken to the workshop, pebbles and shingles lay there, often without any hope of ever being transformed through the mirror of the metaphor… How many have we just picked with no other intention than to feel their warm shape at the bottom of the hand and the iodine perfume of the sea?

Each of these assemblages recall a beach strolling, showing the sand relief, the amber colours of tousled seaweed, the long shadows of pebbles, and the fragility of life.

Folded Papers

LES NUAGES
«Temps lourd»
«Temps clair»
«Temps variable»

Work hanged at the Galerie du Centre of Saint-Lambert. The effect of weather on the colours of the sky and the sea is showed with drawing, colour wash and inlay of seaweeds and pebbles picked from the beach.

«L’enfant dans le grenier»

For this work, I use the Saint-Armand paper factory products where I can get handmade paper of excellent quality.

This relief assemblage was part of the «Lange linceul» exhibition as described in the catalogue:

«All the works approach the strong feeling about the human body wrapped in fabrics from birth to death with practical and symbolic purposes revealing or hiding itself with ritual garments like baby clothes to shroud.»

I have expressed myself on the theme of childhood with fabric in the past. Here I chose a newborn baby, inspired by the writings of Julien Bigras for whom the human being never forgets its first breath. The image was a video transferred as a print of the baby in the attic fallen into oblivion.

«La main de Lucy I»
«La main de Lucy II»
«La main de Lucy III»

For the symposium «Textiles sismographes» in 1995, I gathered a few artists from the CATQ in the exhibition «Les dérives du fil» at the Maison de la Culture Marie-Uguay: Carole Gauron, Lise Nantel, Louise Jamet, Jean-Luc Turbide and myself.

My exploration on the seashore theme ends with this work. Lucy could be the first weaver discovering the potential of dried seaweed. This is a fictional story about the making of shelter and clothing with flexible fibers found on the seashore. I have meditated on the beginnings of such gestures. I show here uncombed threads just as they could have been found by women when the idea of weaving arose. The content of the works shows a printed infographic image of Lucy’s hand with a modulation of pleated paper and woven seaweed recalling the tapestry point.

These elements are conjugated in the future perfect tense: the infographic image captures an actual gesture which is transferred through a play of mind in immemorial times. It is a process which tends to cross over the biographical and even sociological limits of time.
