Art statement
My incursion into the fiber arts started in the seventies. After
studying painting and engraving, my interest turned to printing
fabrics using silkscreen methods. They were for me the best and
simplest manners to explore and reach a pattern out of the repetition
of a shape in order to modulate the canvas as a textile material
surface. Others called this: surfacing.
Since the eighties, I have formed relationships with some fiberart
artists from Quebec, for whom the specific language of fibers and
fabrics constitutes a singular field of contemporary arts: Micheline
Beauchemin, Denise Beaudin, Louise Bérubé, Marcel
Marois Lise Nantel, Louise Jamet, Carole Gauron.
My bidimensional work was presented at the Biennale de la tapisserie
de Montréal and many exhibitions organized by the Conseil
des arts textiles du Québec (CATQ).
I took advantage of the textile qualities of raw silk and canvas,
and of handmade paper and other fibers as a surface and material.
The content of the images reveals a parallel that can be drawn between
the traditional techniques of fiber arts and crafts (sewing, weaving,
pleating, interlacing) and the new technology of electronical production
(video and computer image), by which the image appears as the result
of an agglomeration of tiny little surfaces (points or pixels).
In this presentation, I am showing a selection
of works made since 1981. |
